What kind of accents are you drafting for your character?

I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with Kuuma in game 1, and i'm sure it'll still change and evolve through the first few games until I figure out what I want to do. A few other Calakmel players worked on accents together and I really liked what they drafted, and will probably build upon that. Just curious what others are doing/planning and fleshing out their characters!

Another note: It's totally okay to have no idea what you want to use yet! That's the cool thing about larps, there's always more than one game!

Done well, accents can be an amazing aspect of a character. Done poorly or insensitively, they can make you wince.  🙂

I'm passable at a couple real world ones, but I find it really hard to maintain one consistently throughout a long game so I admire folks that can.  Another thing, they're good for though is sharply delineating in and out of game speech.

Not sure they cover something that would fit Calakmel, but if you haven't ever encounter them, there are a couple great theater audiobook courses called Accents for Actors, Access Accents and Acting with an Accent. I have the following ones, if you want to try them out:

- Accents For Black Actors
- South African For Actors
- Welsh For Actors
- Yorkshire (North & South)
- American, Boston
- American, Chicago
- American, Midwest Farm Ranch
- American, New England, Down East
- American, New England, Upper Class
- American, New York City
- American, Southern
- American, Texas
- Arabic
- British, Australian
- British, Cockney
- British, North Country
- British, Standard
- French
- German
- Irish
- Italian
- Norwegian & Swedish
- Persian (Farsi)
- Polish
- Russian
- Scottish
- Spanish
- West Indian & Black Africa
- Yiddish

If a person can do it well, I really like it for the immersion. Unfortunately, I don't do any accent well enough that won't make a person wince in horror.

I personally have a very limited number of accents I do *well* however only a few are painfully bad.  I avoid those.  As an NPC I do use a lot of linguistic tricks to differentiate NPCs.  Accent is one of those that can help but there are others.

Other things that can help are choices such as whether contractions are used a lot, little, or not at all.

Level of cursing.

Pace of speech.

Tone and pitch of voice.  You can have the exact same accent (or lack of) but basic tone whether a chest voice or more nasal can also help define the character.

I use them all to make sure each character has a distinct voice whenever I can.

My 2 cents

Simpler way to distinguish your NPCs, Scott...

NPC #1:  Gives Arden bags of gold
NPC #2:  Gives Arden scrolls cases full of rare formula
NPC #3:  Gives Arden chests full of Quintessence.

See, much easier!

I worry about how my voice blends. My first language was Yiddish, and I've picked up passable celtic accents from my other side of the family, but I can't personally hear how much I mix them

Mivbi, Larana

I personally have always wondered what Yiddish with a Celtic accent would sound like.

I fully support these being thoroughly mixed.  🙂

I'm pretty cringe inducing which is why I'm rethinking every aspect of kuuma I can. I'll probably make Ryan talk in character with me all the way up to practice. I like the idea of a more deliberate speaking style. Just trying to finalise what i want before we get too many games in LOL

I'm trying to do something like an English accent for my knight. It's hard to maintain and I'm not very good at it, but I figure it's a game, where else can I mess around with a bad accent?  🙂
