Staged/Tiered Skills?

Several of the Weapons and Armor Skills appear to be tiered/staged, but I don't want to make any incorrect assumptions.  Does buying the higher version of a Weapon/Armor skill include its predecessors?


  • Does Heavy Armor include the ability to use Medium Armor?
  • Does Large Ranged Weapons include the ability to use Medium/Short Ranged?
  • Etc?

Similarly, if you have a lower tier/stage of a Weapons and Armor Skill, do you pay the difference to increase it later during the course of play?


  • Does someone with Heavy Armor train for Encased pay the difference or have to buy the new skill from scratch?
  • Etc for shield, melee, thrown weapons?

This will be clarified on the site later but the short answer is this:


All weapon skills must be bought separately.  The costs don't stack.

Armor and Shield do.  When buying up to a bigger amount of armor or a bigger shield you only pay the difference.  You automatically have the use of any cheaper forms of armor or shields.




Along the same lines, are Dodges upgrades Parries point-cost-wise, or separate skills altogether? I assume you are limited to calling three per encounter in any case?

  1. Not rules 😉 but I believe you can normally call up to three Lesser Defenses (Parry, Sidestep, or Spell Flux) and three Greater Defenses (either Dodges or Counterspells) for a total of six defenses normally called. I think you buy each seperately rather than "upgrading them."

Per combat (30 min) you can use up to 3 lesser defenses and 3 greater defenses.  They are separate purchases not upgrades.
