Demon

Demons are possibly one of the most complicated and convoluted collection of entities in Altera.

They range from the seemingly universally malevolent, such as those seen descending upon the heart of the Kingdom of Altera recently, to bargainers and partners in magic in the craft of Warlocks. Indeed, some maintain that the First Ancestors of Calakmel are demons and yet benefactors of that kingdom.

Much is probably lost from the previous ages, but shards and snippets of lore and writing suggest that many demons are part of four major houses and segregated in to strict hierarchies of great granularity. In particular relevance to the “invasion” of late, are four principalities, often called the Lords of the Elements & Directions Cardinal. As the name implies, they are associated with the four cardinal directions as well as the four traditional Elements. With the recent revelation that two elements are currently unaffiliated with these types of demons, there is now strong reason to believe that the entire association with the four traditional elements is the result of corruption or subjugation rather than a “natural” state of affairs.

Although it is difficult to verify the following information, these names and titles that have been referenced or used in association with demons and their hierarchy:

Correction to the above, from April 3017:

Demons are a younger race on Altera, but are ancient before Altera. The Houses are something that developed. They are divided by philosophy, not elements or cardinal directions. (The importance of the Directions Cardinal in the identification of our foes is still worthy of investigation, but it is not salient to the Houses.)

Demons are physically tied to the Order of the world. They find peace when things are “in order.”

The Houses:

Sedim: Things can only come under control through absolute conquest and willing submission. They do not use trickery. They favor using ice, starvation, and similar tactics to break the will of their opponents. Demons of Sedim are known for their loyalty. This is the House that took Colstean. Their Prince is Narvle.

Leviathan: They practice control through consumption. It is not in their nature to give anything in deals. Many monsters are touched by this House, especially werewolves (presumably other lycanthropes as well). Their Prince is Ithan.

Gorgons: They are the smallest House, and composed of warriors. Gorgons wish to conquer and keep things for their own. Constant conflict has reduced their numbers, but those who remain are extremely potent. They do not bargain, so much as test. Their Prince is Iadem.

Whisperers: They favor trickery and mental enslavement. They are very potent. What is happening to the elementals is their doing. Their magics can change the nature of a person. They are willing to deal with our kind, but such bargains are of the greatest danger. Our contact does not know the name of their Prince.

The Free House: They believe that order must be chosen. They seek to earn that outcome. Their Prince is Lexar. He has servants of every element (didn’t confirm/deny elemental Light, but definitely Fire, Ice, Storm, and Earth; all demons have Shadow ties). Our contact was part of the Free House, which undoubtedly colors the perspective of all these details.

There is one whose name our contact could not say, who all other demons answer to. Our contact wishes to see him deposed.

The moment at which a demon profits from bargaining with a warlock – aside from prices paid to learn spells – is when warlocks practice Rites to regain their Tolerance. This draws down power from the Patron, introducing it into the world.

(From the Nameless Dragon/Midnight Wyrm): Demons and the fey can enter the Dreaming. Dragons cannot return to the Dreaming; if they did they would gain a second life (implicitly, rebirth). After Light and Shadow were put away, Radiance and Shadow came to Calakmel to try to claim their place, in imposture. Though Radiance claims to be a demon, she bears no elemental marking, nor other outward sign of demonic nature.

* Note: Idris, the elf from King Patrick’s coronation, said that the demon we talked to through the window was one who had contracted with Zahhak the Undying in the seals, but she wasn’t sure which one. So it’s probably one of the two immediately above. – Vasse

* Note: If it is the one that Zahhak contracted with, then it was Ziratbau that we saw through the window. – Kuuma
